About Spyglass Hill Golf Course

Spyglass Hill Golf Course is one of the most celebrated and demanding public courses in America, winding through the Del Monte Forest on the Monterey Peninsula. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1966, it begins with five holes on the clifftop above Stillwater Cove with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, then plunges into the dense Monterey pine and cypress forest for a dramatic inland second half. The contrast between the exposed oceanside holes and the shaded, narrow forest holes makes Spyglass Hill a uniquely schizophrenic and thrilling experience. It plays as the most difficult course in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am rotation, regularly yielding the highest scores on tour. Named after the Robert Louis Stevenson novel set in nearby Pacific Grove, Spyglass demands accuracy, patience, and supreme course management.

History

Spyglass Hill opened in 1966, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. for the Pebble Beach Company. It became a fixture of the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am (now AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am) almost immediately and is widely regarded as the most strategically challenging of the three courses in that rotation. Named for the location mentioned in Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, the course has been refined over decades while preserving Jones's original vision.

Serious golfers who want to experience one of America's premier championship tests — part ocean drama, part forest mystery — on the world-famous Monterey Peninsula.
